W M-Bus, the ideal Smart Metering protocol
An evolution of M-Bus, W M-Bus (Wireless Meter Bus) is the European communication standard for “Smart Metering” or “advanced metering infrastructure” (AMI) remote or radio readings. It is extensively used in the energy sector to provide data exchanges for Smart Grid. It stands out by the quality of its radio coverage, the ease with which it can be combined with other technology, and the simplicity of its equipment deployments.
An excellent compromise in terms of radio coverage
Based on 169, 433 and 868 MHz frequencies; the digital link associated with W M-Bus is an excellent compromise between small antennas and long ranges both indoors and outdoors (up to 1 km without repeaters). Its bi-directional characteristics allow for remote interventions by a control centre.
Easy combination with other communication protocols
The open Wireless M-Bus protocol is easy to combine with an extended panel of radio and wired technologies both for monitoring and transmission. It is perfectly compatible with serial port, On-Off I/O, M-Bus and Modbus supervision, whereas data broadcast can use 3G, GPRS, LoRa or an Ethernet connection.
Quick and easy technical deployment
The deployment of W M-Bus meter reading equipment on water and energy networks is very simple. All it requires is a high autonomy modem (up to 12 years for a lithium power supply) to collect data from the installation and a central hub (1 unit per 6 to 7 storey building on average) in charge of transmission. Once the system is configured, data exchange becomes fully automatic.
French manufacturer Webdyn has been proposing efficient M2M solutions focussed on network industry smart grid issues for over 20 years. Its W M-Bus hub guarantees the set-up of a simple and cost effective organisation for remote energy readings.
